If Microsoft built cars...
At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, 'If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles/gallon'.

Recently General Motors addressed this comment by releasing the statement: 'Yes, but would you want your car to crash twice a day?'

The National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had covertly funded a project with the US auto makers for the past five years, whereby the auto makers were installing black boxes in four-wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash. They were surprised to find in 47 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2 percent of fatal crashes were, "Oh, Sh*t!"

Only the states of South Carolina, West Virginia and Arkansas were different, where over 89.3 percent of the final words were: "Hold my beer and watch this!

FEATURED ARTICLE

COMING: what to do when your engine catches fire

Having been in the auto repair business for a long long time, I have picked up a few tips to help you pass a smog check.  Here you go, (this article is for California smog tests).

1) Fresh gasoline, do not get your vehicle smogged if it has been sitting for months.
2) Make sure your engine is hot, right off the freeway is the best time to get it smogged. I have seen vehicles fail a smog test, then drive around for a bit and then pass.
3) Make sure the "CHECK ENGINE" light is not on, the tech will fail the test even though he sees the light on. It's his job NOT to tell you to get the light fixed first, then the test.
4) Make sure your engine oil is not too old and at the correct level. Old oil that is contaminated will affect the test results.
5) Never disconnect the battery or allow the battery to go dead a day before a smog test, you will fail.
6) Ask the tech to check and see if the MONITORS are ok before the testing.
7) Make sure your gas cap is tight
8) make sure your gas cap is good. You see the gas cap is the last thing that is checked. The visual, the dyno test and then the function of the gas cap. Strange, something as simple as a bad gas cap can cause your vehicle to fail the test, even though everything else passes. Ever wonder why the gas cap is checked last?
9) Make sure you have the correct tire pressures and near the correct size. You can find the correct size for that vehicle sometimes on the side of the door, where the latch is, or on the panel or pillar where the door shuts.
10) Make sure there is nothing heavy in the vehicle, like books, bricks, sand bags, etc.  The extra weight will cause a load on the dyno.

Subj:  Hey I have an 89 Camaro Rs

Hey I have an 89 Camaro RS with a 2.8L fuel injected engine.  The fuel pump does not prime the system before the engine starts.  But the electric fuel pump will run after the oil pressure is at least 40 psi.  What can be causing this?  Thanks for any help.

Hello MasterRaymond43,

OK here's what I get:
First it sounds like the Prime Mode is not working. Check to see if you have power to the fuel pump relay. If yes, then replace the relay. If no power to the reply, then you'll need to trouble shoot the ignition switch or computer.
This sound like a job for a certified technician, good luck.

i have a 1987 camaro 2.8 multi-port fi v-6 & about every year i have to have a new mass air flow sensor put on it.it doesn't matter if the sensor is after market or a brand name it still goes bad.does anyone else have this problem?if so what did they do to correct it? is there anyway of taking this sensor from the car & putting something better in its place? can we put something in the place of this sensor?
also, every now & then the service engine soon light comes on & i have it to the shop & they tell me the computer shows "code 44 lean exhaust",theyve done everything they know how to do to correct this problem but it still comes on.any suggestions????please email me at beanlovescats@hotmail.com

                                      thanks!

Hello, Ok here is what I find :

Check the dealer and give them your VIN #, ask if your car has or needs the "Speed Density Update"  If you do not have the update, then get it. If you do have the update, then the techs may be replacing the MAS thinking it's bad, when they should be checking the MAP sensor. The update disables the MAS and a MAP is installed. Code 34 is the MAS or the MAP sensor. Also check to see if you have a miss fire as this too can cause the problem your having.

was told that in 89, the RS with a 5 speed was rare, is this true?

Anyone know of a single fiber glass insert for the rear luggage section of the camaro.  The separate side mouldings, flooring etc, are driving me nuts.  They are warped and do not fit anymore.  I want a single slide in piece, any suggestions??????

Subj: 1988 Chevy Camaro?
Date:  7/25/02
From:   el_chico_2002@

I recently got a 1988 Chevy Camaro. It is a V8, 5 speed, manual. It has a different spoiler than most Camaros, but still looks like it was put on by the factory. There is no indications of whether it is a base model or something else. Whatever information you know that can help me determine the model will be very helpful. And if you know of any sites or companies that have a good selection of products to fix up the interior and the exterior will also be very helpful. Thank you.......Adrian Rodriquez

Subj: how can i get my camaro running cooler??
Date:  6/15/02
From:   burley2@ (B.J. Gross)

i have a 94 V-6 camaro with ground effects. it runs a little hot because the front piece covers the plastic air piece under the car. I dont want to take the front ground effect piece off, but how can i keep it running cooler?   HELP!!!!!!

To:  Burley2
In my opinion, if this is a stock set up, or is considered one, then this is not causing the overheating. First we need to verify if the engine is really overheating, and not just a incorrect  gauge or sending unit.  Then we need to find out when does the engine overheat. Having this information helps to pinpoint the problem quickly.

Common areas to look at would be: thermostat, fan, coolant, oil, timing, air/fuel mixture, water pump. There are about 25 other items  to check, so knowing when it overheats is important and if there is any coolant loss. Even if all was perfect to manufactures standards, aggressive driving habits can cause any engine to overheat. Many aftermarket accessories can help to increase engine cooling.

Subj: '85 chevy IROC Z28

From:   xenlover@

Hi my name is Jerry and recently had two IROC Z28 and made one from both. I have some spare parts left like injection rail, TPI ports, and top engine goodies, unfortunately I had the car in the front of my house and one morning the heavy chevy took a cruise without me. I was left with the one that I put together but it is a hard top and I had taken the T-tops off the other car so if anyone is interested in T-tops or engine goodies for sale either e-mail me...

P.S. yes I am a chevy-holic and was sad to hear the camaro will be departing in '03 of course we all know since there was no competition from the other brand we just decided to put our toys away that's the way I see it.
